How to write a clear hospitality hiring brief.

Before hiring for a hotel, restaurant or resort, look beyond the job title. A useful hospitality brief explains the operation, service standards and what the new person needs to contribute.

The starting point

Describe the hospitality responsibilities that will take up most of the person’s time, such as managing front office shifts, supervising restaurant service or running a kitchen section. Explain the decisions they will own, who they will work with and why the position is needed. A specific description gives recruiters and candidates something concrete to discuss.

Separate essentials from preferences

Identify the experience someone needs on day one. Keep a separate list for skills that would be helpful but can be learned. A long list of equally weighted requirements can make it difficult to recognise a suitable background.

Make the practical details visible

Include the location, working arrangement, reporting line and expected compensation range for discussion. If the role involves shifts, travel or relocation, bring that into the first conversation rather than leaving it until an offer.

Agree how the decision will be made

Decide which stakeholders will interview, what each stage should assess and who will bring the feedback together. Give candidates a clear picture of the process and keep assessment focused on the work.

Leave room to refine the brief

The first conversations can reveal where expectations need clarification. Review feedback against the original business need and record any changes so everyone is working from the same version.
